This week marked a significant milestone for Black Girl Hockey Club Canada as we hosted our first-ever West Coast meet-up in Vancouver, BC. The event took place during the PWHL Takeover Tour game at Rogers Arena, where attendees gathered to cheer on two prominent athletes, Sarah Nurse and Mikyla Grant-Mentis.

The meet-up began with exclusive access to the Toronto team’s open practice the day before the game. Community members had the unique opportunity to watch the players up close, witnessing their dedication and preparation firsthand. The anticipation built as the game day approached, and our group was ready to show their support.

On game day, the atmosphere at Rogers Arena was electric. BGHC Canada community members came equipped with signs, cheers, and an abundance of enthusiasm to support Nurse and Grant-Mentis on the ice. The energy in the arena was palpable, and the experience of watching these accomplished athletes perform live was both inspiring and empowering.

The game itself was a highlight, with Mikyla Grant-Mentis making an early impact by scoring a breakaway goal to put Montreal on the board. Her performance was a standout, earning her the second star of the game. The significance of seeing Black women excelling at the highest level of professional hockey was not lost on those in attendance, reinforcing the importance of representation in the sport.

Following the game, BGHC Canada members had the exclusive opportunity to meet with Sarah Nurse and Mikyla Grant-Mentis. Both players graciously took time to engage with attendees, signing posters, answering questions, and taking photos. These interactions left a lasting impression on our community, particularly on the young fans who were able to see firsthand what is possible with hard work and perseverance.

The Vancouver meet-up was a resounding success, with 21 tickets distributed to community members, allowing them to be part of this unforgettable experience. The event highlighted BGHC Canada’s ongoing commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and representation within the hockey community.

BGHC Canada extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in this historic event. We look forward to continuing to build connections and provide meaningful opportunities for our community across Canada. The Vancouver meet-up was just the beginning of our journey on the West Coast, and we are excited to see what the future holds.
